Defective Science David Klatzow Soft Cover.
This is a landmark publication that takes a hard look at ballistic fingerprinting as a forensic tool, and whether it truly holds up under scientific scrutiny.
Originally released as an e-book in 2017, it is now available for the first time in print through G5 Books in association with TheQuarterMaster.
It includes an additional chapter by Dr Klatzow himself.
In a country where forensic evidence can determine the outcome of justice, how reliable is the science behind it?
In 2016, Clem Daniel, a Johannesburg attorney and firearm collector, brought together firearm associations, dealers, and enthusiasts across South Africa to fund an independent scientific investigation into ballistic fingerprinting. The objective was clear - to test whether this widely accepted forensic method could truly withstand scientific scrutiny.
The investigation was led by Dr David Klatzow, one of South Africa’s most respected independent forensic scientists, with over forty-two years of experience. His career includes involvement in landmark cases such as the attempted murder of Frank Chikane and the Helderberg disaster. Commissioned to conduct both research and practical testing, Dr Klatzow approached the subject with scientific rigour and independence.
Supporting the project was Chas Lotter, editor and research lead behind Firearms Developed and Manufactured in Southern Africa, who refined the report and expanded the research into ballistic testing methodologies.
The findings are both significant and controversial.
After a full year of investigation, the conclusion is unequivocal - ballistic fingerprinting, as presented in court, is not definitive science, but rather expert opinion.
Originally released in 2017 as an e-book, Defective Science is now available in a printed edition through G5 Books, including an additional chapter by Dr Klatzow that further explores the implications of these findings.
